Founded thirty years ago by visionary artist and educator Akuyoe Graham, Spirit Awakening Foundation is a Los Angeles nonprofit devoted to illuminating the inner light of incarcerated, abused, and underserved youth. Through meditation and mindfulness, creative writing, visual arts, music, role-play, conflict resolution, and dramatic improvisation, the organization guides young people toward healing and self-discovery. These practices help youth recognize their inherent value, self-worth, and dignity—reminding them that their stories matter and their voices deserve to be heard. In circles of trust and creativity, participants learn to transform pain into purpose and silence into expression.

Spirit Awakening believes that every young person carries within them the power to rise, to lead, and to shine. With compassion and artistry, the foundation continues Akuyoe Graham’s legacy of nurturing transformation from within—awakening hope, purpose, and a renewed sense of belonging.
